UIST 2018 in Berlin, Germany

Pushables: A DIY Approach for Fabricating Customizable And Self-Contained Tactile Membrane Dome Switches

From October 14 to October 17, the 31st ACM Symposium on User Interface Software and Technology (short UIST 2018) took place at the center of Berlin, near the “Fernsehturm Berlin”. The doctoral symposium and welcome reception with great research demostratators happend at Hasso Plattner Institute in Potsdam on Sunday. UIST brings together people from diverse areas including graphical & web interfaces, tangible & ubiquitous computing, virtual & augmented reality, novel devices, and CSCW.

This year, Konstantin Klamka presented our DIY fabrication approach, called Pushables, that allow to easily produce thin, bendable and highly customizable membrane dome switches.

“Mensch und Computer 2018” in Dresden!

The Mensch und Computer conference took place from Sep 2 – 5, 2018 in Dresden, Germany. With a notable number of 770 participants from both research and industry the Mensch und Computer 2018 is again one of the largest German-speaking IT and HCI conferences in Europe. Together with our colleagues from the chair of Human-Computer Interaction, we as members of the Interactive Media Lab were particularly involved in the organization of the conference. And one of our goals was to let this conference be an inspiring event for all participants. In the gallery you can find selected photos, in which various impressions of the Mensch und Computer 2018 in Dresden have been captured.

AVI 2018 in Castiglione della Pescaia, Italy

From May 29 to June 1, the 2018 International Conference on Advanced Visual Interfaces (short AVI 2018) took place in Castiglione della Pescaia (Grosseto, Italy). As a cooperation between several ACM SIGs, this biannual conference is hosted at different locations in Italy.
This year, Ricardo Langner presented two contributions of the Interactive Media Lab Dresden. During the workshop on Multimodal Interaction for Data Visualization we showed our work “Combining Interactive Large Displays and Smartphones to Enable Data Analysis from Varying Distances“, in which we discuss first ideas and interaction concepts as part of our research project Multiple Coordinated Views at Wall-Sized Displays. With “Demonstrating VisTiles: Visual Data Exploration Using Mobile Devices” we also presented the prototype as well as implemented visualization and interaction concepts of the VisTiles project.
Some impressions of the scientific part and non-scientific program can be found in the twitter feed of the conference @AVIConference.

Successful participation at CHI 2018

The ACM Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (short CHI) took place in Montréal, QC, Canada from April 21 to 26. Five of us represented the Interactive Media Lab Dresden by presenting nine contributions in total (see news). One highlight certainly was the presentation of our full paper When David Meets Goliath: Combining Smartwatches with a Large Vertical Display for Visual Data Exploration. The paper is the result of a cooperation of Tom Horak and Raimund Dachselt with Karthik Badam and Niklas Elmqvist from the University of Maryland and received a Honorable Mention Award at ACM CHI 2018.

Best Paper Award for Our Perspective Paper at CHIIR 2018

Wolfgang presented our perspective paper “Here and Now: Reality-Based Information Retrieval” at ACM CHIIR 2018 in New Brunswick, NJ, USA. We are very happy that our concepts and ideas for possible future information retrieval systems in mixed reality environments proved very popular. Our paper was awarded the Best Paper Award at the conference. Congratulations to the authors Wolfgang Büschel, Annett Mitschick and Raimund Dachselt! We also added some photos to our gallery.

Three Contributions at this Year’s ACM ISS 2017

ACM ISS'17

At this year’s ACM ISS (formerly known as ACM ITS) our group presented three accepted contributions – two full papers and one demo contribution. The 2017 ACM International Conference on Interactive Surfaces and Spaces took place in Brighton, UK from October 17th to 20th, 2017. This year, Raimund Dachselt served as one of the program chairs, together with Diego Martinez Plasencia and Tovi Grossman. Wolfgang Büschel presented our full paper Investigating the Use of Spatial Interaction for 3D Data Visualization on Mobile Devices. In this paper, we investigated how mobile devices can be used to explore 3D data visualizations with mobile devices. Additionally, Fabrice Matulic presented the paper Hand Contact Shape Recognition for Posture-Based Tabletop Widgets and Interaction. Finally, we are very happy that Konstantin Klamka, Wolfgang, and Raimund received the Best Demo Award for their IllumiPaper demo Illuminated Interactive Paper with Multiple Input Modalities for Form Filling Applications. We also added some photos to our gallery.

Successful participation at ISS 2016

The ACM International Conference on Interactive Surfaces and Spaces took place in Niagara Falls, ON, Canada from November 6 to 9. This was the first time the conference was held under its new name instead of Interactive Tabletops and Surfaces (ITS). Five of us represented the Interactive Media Lab Dresden by presenting nine publications in total (see news). Highlights certainly were the presentation of our two papers by Patrick Reipschläger (MultiLens) and Ulrich von Zadow (Miners).

Nine Contributions at this Year’s ACM ISS 2016

At this year’s ACM ISS (formerly known as ACM ITS) our group presents nine accepted contributions – 1 full papers, 1 note, 3 posters, 1 co-organized workshop, 3 workshop contributions. The 2016 ACM International Conference on Interactive Surfaces and Spaces takes place in Niagara Falls, Canada from November 6th to 9th, 2016. The subject of our full paper MultiLens: Fluent Interaction with Multi-Functional Multi-Touch Lenses for Information Visualization are the seamless and intuitive parameterisation, combination and visualization of magic lenses for touch-enabled interactive displays. Additionally, Ulrich von Zadow will present the note Miners: Communication and Awareness in Collaborative Gaming at an Interactive Display Wall which is joint work with students of our lab.

IEEE VIS 2016 in Baltimore, USA

The IEEE VIS, the biggest conference on visualization research, was held in Baltimore, Maryland (USA) this year from October 23rd to 28th. Tom Horak represented the Interactive Media Lab Dresden at this event with multiple contributions. On Sunday, he discussed our work Logging in Visualizations: Challenges of Interaction Techniques Beyond Mouse and Keyboard at the workshop “Logging Interactive Visualizations & Visualizing Interaction Logs” (LIVVIL). Furthermore, he presented two posters on novel interaction techniques for data exploration: Towards Combining Mobile Devices for Visual Data Exploration was awarded an honorable mention award. It describes the adaptations of visualizations as a result of mobile device combination. The second poster Supporting Graph Exploration Tasks on Display Walls using Spatially-aware Mobile Devices addresses graph exploration on large display walls by means of a mobile device.
