From the 16th to the 20th of October, the 22nd IEEE International Symposium on Mixed and Augmented Reality (ISMAR 2023) was held Sydney, Australia. The ISMAR conference explores exciting contributions in the commercial and research activities involving Augmented, Mixed and Virtual Reality. As part of the conference, and along with other top researchers in the area, Raimund Dachselt co-organized the first Workshop on “Hybrid User Interfaces”.
The workshop aimed to consolidate a common understanding of the fragmented terminology revolving Hybrid User Interfaces (HUIs), as well as exploring potential application domains that benefit from such cross-device environments. To accommodate remote participation, the workshop was split in two — one virtual session and one in-presence session, both groups sharing hybrid keynote by Steven Feiner. Our Interactive Media Lab Dresden additionally contributed three papers to this event. Regarding the terminology, Marc Satkowski presented “Fantastic Hybrid User Interfaces and How to Define Them”, which discusses the shortcomings and inconsistencies in the pile of definitions of HUIs. Towards the application domains, Katja Krug discussed exciting works from our lab that make use of HUIs to provide support in the medical domain, with the paper “Discussing Facets of Hybrid User Interfaces for the Medical Domain”. Lastly, Julián Méndez presented “How Does Explainability Look In Hybrid User Interfaces?”, reflecting on the challenges and opportunities that arise at the intersection of these research domains.
Some impressions of the scientific part and non-scientific program can be found in the twitter feed of the ISMAR 2023 conference.
