The ACM Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (short CHI) took place in Glasgow, UK from May 4 to 9. Four of us represented the Interactive Media Lab Dresden by presenting four contributions in total (see news).

The presentation of our full paper Vistribute: Distributing Interactive Visualizations in Dynamic Multi-Device Setups certainly was one of the highlights. The paper is the result of a cooperation between Tom Horak and Raimund Dachselt with Andreas Mathisen and Clemens N. Klokmose from Aarhus University as well as Niklas Elmqvist from the University of Maryland. The focus of the work is on automatically distributing interactive visualizations in multi-device setups.

The conference started on Saturday with our participation in the Human-Centered Machine Learning Perspectives (HCMLP) Workshop where Raimund Dachselt presented our work Interactive Exploration of Large Decision Tree Ensembles, which is a result of our ongoing cooperation with ai4bd. On the weekend, Tom Horak participated in the Doctoral Consortium and presented his current progress in his doctoral program about Designing for Visual Data Exploration in Multi-Device Environments.

Furthermore, our well-received interactivity ScaleDial: A Novel Tangible Device for Teaching Musical Scales & Triads was presented by Konstantin Klamka and Jannik Wojnar during the reception on Monday evening and on every day during the breaks. The work emerged from Jannik’s bachelor’s thesis and offers a playful way to learn basic music theory. In addition to the CHI demo, we presented ScaleDial also at the CHI Lites event to a general audience on Thursday evening, attracting many curious locals.

On Wednesday evening, the German HCI Party took place in an amazing location right under the central station and was one of the biggest network event co-located with the conference. This event is organized by over 20 German labs and universities—including the Interactive Media Lab. All publications of these labs from this year’s CHI are also put together in a booklet: imld.de/germanhci.

In short, the CHI was a highly successful conference for our group with fruitful research discussions and a great accompanying program as can be seen in our photo gallery.

Next year’s CHI will take place in Honolulu, Hawaii, USA from April 25 to 30. Tom Horak will again be part of the organizing committee.
