Paper has properties that bring, in comparison to computers, advantages in many situations. Writing mathematical expressions on paper is simpler and more intuitive than writing them on a computer. Nevertheless, most mathematical tutoring systems use computers for interaction.
By enhancing paper with thin and bendable EL-Displays, it is possible to create a computerised tutoring system, which utilizes the advantages of the input via paper. After considering the functions a mathematical tutoring system should contain, concepts are presented that show how those functions could be implemented using a pen-and-paper user interface that gives feedback using EL-Displays. Lastly, a prototypical implementation demonstrates how such a system could look like.
