GEMS ist eine Kooperation zwischen dem Lehrstuhl Multimedia-Technologie (IML) der TU Dresden und dem Lehrstuhl Computergraphik (VC²G) der Universität Rostock. Weitere Informationen finden sich auch auf der Website des Projektes GEMS.

Graphen spielen in verschiedensten Anwendungsgebieten eine wichtige Rolle, u.a. für das Softwareengineering (z.B. Klassendiagramme), in der Biologie (z.B. Darstellung von Zusammenhängen, Reaktionen und Prozesse) oder im Aufbau und der Analyse von sozialen Netzwerken. Durch die große Informationsmenge, die in diesen Anwendungsgebieten der Normalfall ist, wird schon die reine Exploration der Daten zur komplizierten Aufgabe. Weiteres Vorgehen, wie die Analyse und Bearbeitung dieser Daten, benötigt daher sogar noch zusätzliche, besondere Unterstützung.

Bisherige Forschung konzentrierte sich bereits auf mausbasierte Exploration von Graphen, sowie das reine Erstellen von Graphenknoten und -beziehungen. Durch die Einsatz von neuartigen Interaktionsmodalitäten und multiplen interaktiven Oberflächen soll in diesem Projekt nun erforscht werden, wie das visuelle Explorieren und Manipulieren von Graphen gleichermaßen unterstützt werden kann. Dabei werden vor allem neuartige Visualisierungs- und Interaktionskonzepte zur Unterstützung der Arbeit an großen Graphen betrachtet. Kernziele des Projektes sind

  • die Verschmelzung von Explorations- und Manipulationsaufgaben bei der Arbeit mit Graphen,
  • die effektive Integration von Interaktion mit und Visualisierung von strukturierten Informationen, sowie
  • der sinnvolle Einsatz von unterschiedlichen Interaktionstechniken und Eingabegeräten für die Unterstützung von Nutzern beim Erforschen und Manipulieren von Graphen.

 

Zur EuroVis 2014 in Swansea, Wales präsentierte das Interactive Media Lab Dresden gemeinsam mit den Projektpartnern der Universität Rostock einen State-of-the-Art Report mit dem Titel A Survey on Interactive Lenses in Visualization. In dem STAR wurden bestehende Arbeiten zu Linsen aus verschiedensten Anwendungsgebieten kategorisiert und klassifiziert. Dabei wurde insbesondere auf die Unterscheidung von Linsen für unterschiedliche Datentypen und mögliche Interaktionsaufgaben eingegangen. Ulrike Kister präsentierte mögliche existierende Interaktionsmodalitäten und Display Setups für die Steuerung und Einstellung von Linsen. Darunter waren unter anderem Maus-gesteuerte Linsen, Touch-Linsen, greifbare Linsen und Blick-gesteuerte Linsen.
