Examination

Change to Online Exam:
Due to the COVID pandemic, the examination for „Data Visualization“ will be conducted as an online exam. This also applies to students who would normally have an oral complex examination or want to retake the examination! Further information and updates will be provided in the OPAL course (tud.link/tl99). For further question please contact Tom Horak and Ludwig Schmutzler.
Repeat Exam

Repeat exam: 2021-08-02, 09:20am, 60-min online exam.
Important: For Selma and jExam, the enrollment period ends on July 4! Please make sure to enroll on time. Similar to the winter term, (Media) Computer Science Master’s students have to enroll via email to the examination office. Also, please make sure that you have logged in at the Exam@TUD3 server at least once until July 14. For more details, please see the exam information page.
A technical test will be run on 2021-07-19, 09:20am, where you can get familiar with the online exam system.
  • Important for Oral Complex Examinations:
    • In accordance to the existing exception regulation, all (partial) complex examinations have to be conducted in form of the online exam. Unfortunately, we can only deviate from this in justified exceptional cases.
    • Please carefully read the official instructions for examinations (procedure for examinations)! You have to register first at the examination office and then contact the main examiner (secretariat) with the examination admission.
    • If it is not possible for you to register via jExam, please contact your course supervisor
    • Modules: INF-VMI-4, INF-VMI-8, INF-BAS7, INF-VERT3, INF-VERT7

News

  • The course will start with a live lecture via a video conference tool on Oct 28, 2020 at 13:00! The link will be provided within the OPAL course.
  • The enrollment will start on Oct 5, 2020. CMS students have to enroll via SELMA, all others please enroll via jExam.

Description

This lecture covers the basics and practices of scientific visualization of measurement and experimental data as well as simulation results. It teaches the basics of visual perception and their influence on the design of visualizations. Students will learn to confidently specify data by dimension, feature types, and structure and select appropriate visual attributes for a given specification. They learn the most important visualization forms for 2-, 3- and multidimensional observation spaces as well as for scalar, vectorial, tensor-valued and multidimensional features. They will be able to select suitable techniques for the respective visualization task.

The course work will familiarize students with basic presentation and interaction techniques and teaches them to thoroughly implement them in an interactive visual analysis system. It introduces important visualization frameworks and allows students to gather practical experience with them.

Organization

  • This term, the course will be held virtually.
  • Lectures and exercise introductions will be provided as video and/or live streams.
  • Important: There will be live sessions (via video calls) where course participants are expected to be present, for both lecture and exercise.
  • The course will be managed via OPAL. We will add participants to the OPAL course after the enrollment phase.
